If you want to get more traffic to your |
web site, one of the best methods of doing so is to increase the number of incoming links (known as "backlinks") that lead to your web site. This is for two reasons:-
1. People navigate around the web by clicking on links. Thus every link to your web site that appears on another site can provide at least a trickle of traffic. Of course a link from a busy or popular web site may be able to provide more than trickle, so such links to be especially valuable. But the general point remains - increasing the total number of links to your site, will boost your traffic.
2. Search engines consider a number of factors when sorting and ordering the items in their results. One factor that they many (including Google) consider is the number of incoming links to each site. Thus, if you can get more incoming links to your site, you may be able to improve your search engine rankings. This is important, because the higher your rankings (that is to say the nearer the top of the results your site appears onr relevant searches), the more visitors that you will get from search engines.
Traditionally the main way to get links to other sites was to exchange links ("two way links"). While this option remains open, it is time consuming to find sites to link to, set up your links back to each of them, and to make sure that other sites are maintaining their links to you on an ongoing basis. While programs such as SEO Elite can take much of the spade work out of such activities, they don't completely eliminate it. In any case, outgoing links also mean that you are sending traffic to other web sites and "diluting" your own site.
If you want to get one way links to your web site, one of the best ways to do it is write your own articles and submit them to article directories. When you do this, your article will be displayed not only on the article directories, but it also may be reprinted by other web site and ezine owners. The return you get for providing this free content is that at the bottom of each article, a short paragraph about you or your business, known as a "resource box", "author bio", or "byline", is displayed, and this may include a link to your web site.
The nice thing about article marketing, is that it does not cost you anything per visitor (unlike say
Google AdWords). You can write an article once, and that same article can keep on sending you visitors, and keep on contributing to your search engine ranking, for years and years. I won't pretend that a single article will necessarily make much difference by itself, but if you keep on writing and submitting articles on a regular basis, the cumulative effect of all this articles can be quite substantial.
One other issue that you should be aware of is that there are hundreds of different article directories. While it is true that the most valuable directories to contribute to are the major ones, like EzineArticles.com, if you want to get the best return for each of your articles, you should submit each article to as many directories as possible.
